Our facilitation preparation sessions involve three elements:
Readings:
We’ve selected short texts to provide background information and context for each session. We recommend using the provided readings, but if you find additional resources that were helpful or exciting, please share them with the group! We’ll have a discussion about the readings during our group calls, so please read them beforehand (and identify points of reflection in your design journal).
Note: The readings will be shared in the weekly emails.
Activity:
Beyond reading, each facilitation preparation session also includes an exploration activity. This activity will be the one you will run with your patrons (or something very similar). These will also get you out and exploring your local environment, and will assist in identifying good locations for the weekly field exercises with patrons!
Design Journal:
When doing readings or the activity, please keep an online design journal (you’ll find examples in the weekly emails). We adopted this from Dr. Karen Brennan’s HGSE class “Designing for Learning by Creating”, and found it to be a great way to share thoughts, questions, and insights with one another. In your design journal, add photos, quotes from readings, thoughts, and questions you have. Also, please take a look at other people’s design journals as well!
